Call for papers: Critical Animals

It looks like its “Calls for entry” season, I’d better get to work on some applications.

Critical Animals

CALL FOR PAPERS: CRITICAL ANIMALS – postgraduates working in the new medias.

CRITICAL ANIMALS – an interdisciplinary conference for postgraduate students working critically in the areas of culture, art and communications – would like to hear from postgraduate students interested in delivering a paper at
the conference to be held on Thursday 30th September and Friday 1st of October 2004 in Newcastle, NSW.

CRITICAL ANIMALS is part of the This Is Not Art festival, the largest gathering of young media makers and artists in Australia. CRITICAL ANIMALS is a unique opportunity for postgraduate students to present their work to a diverse, knowledgable and active audience.

Suggested topics include:
- screen and networked cultures
- reading new (and not so) publishing technologies and practices
- games and theory
- reading subcultural texts; including stencils, zines, comics and stickers
- new readings of fancultures
- sound and music practices
- public space interventions and protest cultures
- methodological conundrums and ellipses

Papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of the New
Media Poetics journal, www.newcastle.edu.au/journal/poetics.

The conference format is 30 minute paper, followed by 45 minutes chaired
discussion. Suggestions for panel discussions are welcome.

200 word abstracts.
DEADLINE: Thursday July 1st 2004.
